Can AI assistants book restaurants yet?
Partly, and mostly not on the restaurant's own website. In July 2026 we tested 200 randomly sampled Amsterdam restaurants: an AI agent driving a real browser got to the final booking step at 16 of them, and none of the 163 working websites offered a booking interface an assistant could call directly. A re-run in September found the same zero.

Two ways an assistant can book, and why they are different
An assistant can drive a browser the way a person would: find the booking button, open the widget, fill date, time and party size. That works on some sites, slowly, and breaks when the page changes.
Or it can call an interface: send a request and get availability and a booking back as data. That is the reliable way, and it is what none of the 163 restaurant websites in our sample offered, in July or in September.
Where the browser agent got stuck
On 79 of the 163 websites the agent found a booking path at all. On 32 it could read the actual date and time fields. On 16 it reached the step where only the guest's own name and phone remained. At 26 of the 200 restaurants it was stopped by the venue's own protection, such as a captcha or an anti-bot check.
The agent never submitted a booking. Reaching that last step is what the study counts as "an assistant could have finished this".
What Google already does
Google's AI Mode can look up live table availability on booking platforms and show open times inside the answer. The person still taps to confirm, and the booking happens on the platform. So the shortlist is increasingly built before anyone opens a restaurant's website, and a restaurant whose availability cannot be read is simply not in it.
What a restaurant can check today
The same things the study measured, in the order an assistant meets them:
- A booking entry point on your own website that an agent can find.
- Date, time and party size as real form fields.
- No captcha on the part that only reads hours and free tables.
- A consent banner that does not cover the booking form.
- Availability and booking offered as data (an API or an MCP server), not only as a widget.
Questions
Can ChatGPT book a restaurant table?
Only where it can operate the booking page like a person or use a booking platform it is connected to. On the restaurant's own website this worked at 16 of 200 Amsterdam restaurants in our July 2026 test, and none of the websites offered an interface an assistant could call.
Why can't AI assistants book most restaurants?
Because most booking flows are built for people: widgets that do not expose their fields, captchas on public information, consent banners over the form, and no machine-readable availability. In our sample, 26 of 200 restaurants blocked the agent with their own protection.
Does Google book restaurant tables with AI?
Google's AI Mode can show live open times from booking platforms inside the answer, and the person taps to confirm. It does not book on the restaurant's own website on its own.
How was this measured?
An agent walked each restaurant's public booking path in a real browser and stopped where only the guest's own details remained. No personal data was typed and no booking was ever submitted.
